Finding the problem of a computer sometimes it can be easy and sometimes not, talking about my own experiences I had troubleshoot some computers that took me a couple of hours to find the source of the problem. Like I said before sometimes it can be found and fix fast and sometimes you can take all night searching for the problem.
Here are some tips when searching for problems in a computer
- Trail and error – If you suspect the computer has a hardware failure problem remove the hardware piece and turn on the computer, if it doesn’t resolve the problem install back the hardware piece you removed and go ahead and remove another possible hardware piece. Most computers provide short beeps codes telling you which hardware is causing the failure, the knowledge you need to know is how to identify the codes.
- Check internal cables- Sometimes when computes are moved or kicked by accident some cables get lose overtime, check all the internal cables (ex. IDE cables, CD-ROM cables, Power supply cables, etc..) and search for possible lose cable.
- Don’t get frustrated- Frustration is very common when looking for a computer problem, sometimes the technician get desperate when looking a problem. If you feel frustrated because couldn’t find the problem that day leave the computer and try to fix it again when you feel better and relaxed. Remember fixing a computer takes time is like when a patient visit a doctor he or she has to take time to know the source of the health problem. Just take it easy please and let the problem come to you, I guaranteed that when you are almost to give up you will find the problem.
- Take notes – An important stuff all technicians must do is to record all the errors and what it fixed the problem for future similar problems, it easier to fix a computer with a problem you had deal before than trying to learn again a problem you know you fixed before but didn’t write the solution. It’s very frustrating, always write the cause of the problem and the solution to that problem when you fix a computer.
- Test computer before returning- I had fixed a lot of computers that according the previous computer repair shop was working find, if you don’t want a bad reputation make sure the computer will keep working a long days and not a week. A good repair service is a way to get long term customers, they will keep coming to you when another problem comes.
If you are new in the computer repair business don’t be scared about making mistakes because we all make mistakes, just don’t panic and fix the mistake by offering something free. The MISTAKE I’m taking about is the most common one “BAD DIAGNOSTIC” these mistakes can cost us client credibility.
