Recognizing phishing scams

By Joel Rivera, October 30, 2008

Phishing is another way of creating a false legitimate company to make you believe you’re dealing with the real company, these types of scams are seen on emails, post cards, newspapers, etc… The problem with these emails is that phishers hides very good the real website address making it difficult for the person to know it.

This is how it look a fake email looks like:

Do you see the catch? The web address listed in the email appears as a secured site (1) but when you move your mouse pointer to the link it shows the real phisher address (2), these are the things you have to be careful about.

According to this email it was sent by Woogrove Bank and is asking the user to access their accounts using the real Woogrove bank, guess what will happen if you enter your bank username and password the phisher will capture your information to go to the real Woogrove bank and steal your money.

Here are some popular terms used by these robbers:

  • Verify your account
  • You won the lottery
  • If you don’t respond within 48 hours, your account will be closed

and this is how phishing links looks like:

They will always try to re-phrase the real address with a local bank or whatever company they use, remember if you move the mouse pointer on top of the web address and shows another address like example above don’t dare to click on it or you will be in big “identity theft” problem.
