Internal Modem Installation

Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cable from the electrical outlet – Very important (Security) Open Computer Case, and Discharge your Static Electricity. To discharge your static electricity touch your computer case with both hands for about 40 sec, once you have done that you’re free to touch the internal circuits.

Locate an available PCI Slot inside your computer, PCI Slots are the small white slots.

Get your new 56k modem and insert it inside of one of the PCI Slot, be careful with the pressure to much pressure can break the motherboard. Ok now that the new modem is inserted get a screwdriver and tight the little screw that came with the modem.

Now lets get to the driver programming – close the computer case, connect back the power cable to the power supply and turn on the computer, OK now the boot up process is complete and it says that a new hardware is found, cancel that warning and insert the CD that came with the 56k Internal Modem. If the CD don’t run automatically go to Start, then My Computer, locate the CD-ROM icon which the default is (D:) unless you have another CD-DRIVE installed in the computer and click on it. Look for the setup icon and click on it and wait for installation to complete.

To test your new 56k modem – Go to Start, Control Panel, Phone and Modem Options, Click on Modem Tab, Click Properties, Then Diagnostic Tab, and finally click on Query Modem button to run test. If the modem accept the query then congratulation you’re done.

Test the modem connecting to your ISP and watch for any weird signs

External Modems Installation

External modems are easy to install you only have to install the Ethernet Cat5 cable or USB to the computer port, of course it has to be configured after the installation so let get on it then!

Cable modem and DSL modems are basically installed using the same procedure, the difference is how they get online. Most cable companies install the cable modem and call tech support to register the modem HSF MAC, after the modem is completely registered the light will stop blinking and stay steady. So it’s surf time!

DSL Modem activation is different when a user request new DSL service the company lets say Verizon verifies the line and if DSL is available for that line they proceed to ship the DSL modem. During the order process a start date signal is estimated on the order to let know the user when can install the DSL modem. Why the user can’t install the new modem before the start date? Because the DSL modem will not synchronize with their server, so that means the lights will keep blinking and blinking and blinking you get my point.

Before the start date no DSL signal will be available in your line, after the start date your DSL signal should be working and the DSL modem should have all the LEDs steady let in you know you have signal. Account activations varies within companies, I encourage you to follow the company Internet provider CD and Manual instruction to complete the account activation.
